Ultrasonographic characteristics of renal lymphoma in cats receiving chemotherapy.

This multicenter retrospective study aimed to describe renal ultrasonographic findings in cats with confirmed renal lymphoma undergoing chemotherapy and to correlate these findings with clinical and clinicopathological data. The study included 24 cats (20 males, 4 females; median age 8 years) that received a multi-agent chemotherapy regimen consisting of vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and prednisolone (COP). Ultrasonographic images of the kidneys were obtained at diagnosis (T0) and after chemotherapy (T1), with a median interval of 33 days (range 20–60 days) between assessments. At T1, 21 cats showed clinical improvement, with 20 exhibiting enhanced renal appearance on ultrasound and one maintaining a stable appearance. Two cats had stable clinical findings, and one cat experienced clinical decline. Ultrasonographic improvements included resolution of nephromegaly in 12 of 20 cats, disappearance of hypoechoic subcapsular rims in 6 of 17 cats, and reduction or disappearance of nodules and/or masses in 13 of 14 cats. Renal function improved, with 11 cats resolving azotemia detected at T0 by T1, and four cats remaining persistently azotemic, all with reduced creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations. These findings suggest that chemotherapy can lead to significant ultrasonographic and clinical improvements in cats with renal lymphoma, with kidneys often returning to normal size and appearance. The study highlights the utility of ultrasonography in monitoring treatment response and correlating imaging findings with clinical outcomes.
