This multi-institutional, retrospective study aimed to evaluate the frequency and severity of gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events in dogs with multicentric lymphoma treated with multi-agent chemotherapy protocols incorporating either doxorubicin or epirubicin. A total of 178 dogs were included, with 114 (64.1%) receiving epirubicin and 64 (35.9%) receiving doxorubicin. GI adverse events occurred in 46 dogs (40.3%) in the epirubicin group and 36 dogs (56.2%) in the doxorubicin group. Statistical analysis revealed that male neutered dogs, those younger than 10 to 15 years, receiving epirubicin at a dosage of 1 mg/kg, and those with stage V disease were at a higher risk of developing GI adverse events. The study concluded that while doxorubicin was associated with a higher incidence of GI adverse events compared to epirubicin, further prospective studies are necessary to determine the optimal anthracycline choice to minimize these adverse effects.
