A total of 20 diabetic dogs were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either FMT or a placebo. Serum GLP-1 concentrations were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results indicated that dogs receiving FMT had a significant reduction in blood glucose levels and HbA1c concentrations compared to the placebo group. Additionally, FMT led to a significant improvement in faecal dysbiosis indices, with an increase in beneficial bacterial species and a decrease in pathogenic ones. The SCFA profile showed an increase in butyrate and propionate concentrations, while bile acid profiles remained unchanged. Serum GLP-1 concentrations were significantly higher in the FMT group, suggesting an enhancement in insulin secretion. These findings suggest that lyophilised oral FMT may be a promising adjunctive therapy for managing diabetes mellitus in dogs by improving glycaemic control and modulating the gut microbiome.
