This study evaluated the prevalence and persistence of hypertension in hyperthyroid cats before and after radioiodine treatment. A total of 401 hyperthyroid, nonazotemic cats were included, with systolic blood pressure (SBP) measured via Doppler ultrasonography. Prior to treatment, 27% (108/401) of cats were hypertensive (SBP ≥160 mm Hg). Notably, a higher proportion of hypertensive cats exhibited nervous or excited behavior compared to normotensive cats (47% vs. 12%; P < .001). Six months post-treatment, 87 of the initially hypertensive cats were reexamined; 49% (43/87) normalized their SBP, while 51% (44/87) remained hypertensive. Additionally, 9.5% (16/168) of initially normotensive cats developed hypertension after successful radioiodine treatment. Among the 60 treated hypertensive cats, 12% (7/60) were azotemic, and 15% (9/60) were hypothyroid. The study concluded that while hypertension often resolves in hyperthyroid cats after successful treatment, some may develop or persist with hypertension post-treatment.
