The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of feline chaphamaparvovirus (FeChPV) in various cat populations, including those with and without gastrointestinal disease outbreaks. Fecal and vomit samples were collected from 136 cats across different facilities: 65 from an animal shelter without increased gastrointestinal disease (shelter A), 25 from three shelters experiencing acute vomiting and diarrhea (shelters B-D), and 46 from a research colony with a recent gastrointestinal disease outbreak. FeChPV was detected in 22% of samples overall, with varying prevalence across facilities: 12% in shelter A, 11% in shelter B, 25% in shelter C, 88% in shelter D, and 26% in the research colony. Within shelter A, FeChPV was found in 9.6% of non-diarrheic cats and 23% of diarrheic cats, though this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.19). Overall, FeChPV was present in 33% of diarrheic cats and 17% of healthy cats, with a P-value of 0.07. Multivariable analysis indicated that the odds of PCR positivity were 5.7 times higher in shelter D compared to other facilities (95% CI 2.3-25, P<0.0001). The findings suggest that FeChPV is commonly found in shelters with acute gastrointestinal disease but also present in healthy cats and facilities without apparent disease increases, indicating that its role in feline gastrointestinal disease and facility outbreaks remains unclear.
