This preliminary interventional study investigated the effects of aerobic exercise on interstitial glucose (IG) concentrations in five client-owned dogs with naturally-occurring insulin-treated diabetes mellitus using flash glucose monitoring. Dogs performed standardized aerobic exercise daily for seven consecutive days, with distance tailored to body weight (1.5-3 miles). IG measurements were obtained at baseline (0.5h pre-exercise) and at 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 4 hours post-exercise using multivariable mixed-effects linear regression analysis. Significant reductions in IG were demonstrated at 1.5 hours (188 mg/dL) and 2 hours (185 mg/dL) post-exercise compared to baseline (223 mg/dL), with p-values of 0.03 and 0.008 respectively. No significant differences were observed at 4 hours post-exercise. These findings suggest aerobic exercise may provide a therapeutic adjunct for glycemic management in insulin-treated diabetic dogs, potentially reducing IG levels for up to two hours following exercise in a home setting.
