This prospective observational study evaluated the flash glucose monitoring system (FGMS; FreeStyle Libre) in 23 healthy, nondiabetic dogs to establish baseline glucose patterns and assess device accuracy across normal glucose ranges. Dogs wore FGMS devices for up to 14 days with ≥488 readings each. Results demonstrated that 73.7% of dogs experienced at least one low interstitial glucose (IG) concentration (<70 mg/dL), with a mean of 2.8% low readings per dog. Conversely, 26.3% had at least one high IG concentration (>180 mg/dL), averaging 0.8% per dog. Markedly low (<55 mg/dL) and markedly elevated (>250 mg/dL) concentrations occurred in 63.2% and 10.5% of dogs respectively. Smaller dogs (2.5-20.5 kg) had significantly higher frequencies of low IG concentrations compared to larger dogs (20.6-41.4 kg). These findings provide critical baseline data for interpreting FGMS results in diabetic dogs and highlight potential limitations of the device during hypoglycemic states.
