This prospective laboratory study characterized the cellular and biochemical composition of ProVet autologous platelet concentrate (APC), a portable platelet-rich plasma (PRP) system designed for field use in equine practice. Blood from 6 healthy horses was processed using the ProVet system, and leukocyte and platelet concentrations were compared between whole blood and APC, while cytokine and growth factor concentrations were compared between APC and serum using immunoassays. APC demonstrated a 6.9-fold increase in leukocyte concentration (51.60 × 10³ cells/μL vs. 7.43 × 10³ cells/μL) and a 7.4-fold increase in platelet concentration (883.00 × 10³ vs. 120.0 × 10³ platelets/μL) compared to whole blood, classifying it as a leukocyte-rich PRP. Critically, IL-1Ra was significantly elevated in APC compared to serum, and the IL-1Ra:IL-1β ratio was markedly higher in APC (1,169) versus serum (11.86), suggesting a predominantly anti-inflammatory cytokine environment. TGF-β1 was also significantly elevated in APC. Conversely, IGF-1 and PDGF-BB concentrations were significantly lower in APC than in serum.
