This retrospective case series examined 11 dogs that underwent total hip replacement (THR) following failed hip toggle surgery. Hip toggles failed due to re-luxation (8 dogs) or chronic lameness (3 dogs). Radiographic evaluation revealed osteoarthritis in 10/11 dogs, with femoral head coverage <50% in 8 dogs. Initial luxation etiology was traumatic (5), atraumatic (4), or unknown (2). Pre-THR cultures were obtained for 5 dogs via fine needle aspiration and toggle materials. Intraoperative and postoperative complications occurred in 4 dogs (minor, major, and catastrophic severity). Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs questionnaires were completed for 8/11 dogs with median scores of 6.5, comparable to uncomplicated THR cases. Nine of 11 dogs achieved successful outcomes. The findings demonstrate that THR can be safely and effectively performed in dogs with failed hip toggle surgery, despite requiring additional surgical and management considerations.
