CT-derived tracheal measurements reliably predict optimal stent size in dogs with tracheal collapse.
This retrospective study evaluated a computed tomography (CT)-based method for predicting optimal tracheal stent size in dogs with tracheal collapse (grades I-III). Eleven dogs underwent tracheal stenting with measurements derived from CT images at four standardized locations: 1 cm caudal to the larynx, thoracic inlet, midthoracic trachea, and 1 cm cranial to the carina. Tracheal diameter was calculated from major and minor axis measurements, averaged to determine predicted stent diameter. Using manufacturer regression formulas, predicted stent lengths were compared to actual lengths determined from fluoroscopic images post-deployment. Results demonstrated high accuracy with predicted lengths within 0-5.5% of actual lengths (median 2.32%), with 10 of 11 dogs showing <5% error. This CT-based methodology provides a reliable, non-invasive approach for precise stent sizing, potentially improving procedural efficiency and reducing complications associated with inappropriate stent selection in canine tracheal collapse management.
