Summary

This retrospective and prospective study evaluated 61 dogs with congenital intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (cIHPSS) treated with percutaneous transcatheter coil embolization (PTCE). Median follow-up was 769 days with median survival of 1496 days. One-, two-, and five-year survival rates were 83%, 66%, and 54%, respectively. The congenital portosystemic shunt severity score (Hr-CPSS) significantly improved from median 25 pre-diagnosis to 5 post-PTCE (p<0.001). Health-related quality of life (Hr-QoL) scores substantially improved post-PTCE (median 100) compared to pre-diagnosis (35) and post-medical management (75). At final follow-up, 56% of dogs required ongoing medical management and/or specialized diet. PTCE combined with targeted medical therapy provided significant improvement in clinical signs, quality of life, and long-term survival, representing an effective minimally invasive treatment option for canine cIHPSS.
