This prospective educational study evaluated three teaching methods for left atrial-to-aortic ratio (LA:Ao) echocardiographic assessment in 36 fourth-year veterinary students. Group A received video-only instruction, Group B received video plus in-person teaching, and Group C received video plus instructor-led hands-on training. Student confidence was assessed at baseline (T0), immediately post-intervention (T1), and 7-8 months later (T2). LA:Ao image acquisition and interpretation were evaluated at T1 and T2. Results showed that hands-on training (Group C) produced the highest proportion of students acquiring interpretable LA:Ao views at both timepoints (58% at T1, 57% at T2) compared to video alone (20% and 40%) or video with in-person instruction (33% and 50%). Image interpretation scores remained relatively stable across groups, with Group C maintaining the highest median score (4/5) at both timepoints. While confidence improved in image interpretation across all groups, only Group C showed improved confidence in ultrasound machine operation. The study suggests hands-on training enhances practical acquisition skills, though video instruction may suffice for interpretation competency.
