This study compared imaging artifacts produced by cannulated versus solid-core titanium screws implanted in canine humeral condyles using both MRI and CT imaging. Three groups were evaluated with different screw configurations from multiple manufacturers. MRI sequences included SE DP/T2, Turbo 3D T1, STIR, and fast FLAIR, while CT used transverse imaging. Results demonstrated that solid screws produced more discrete, localized artifacts on MRI with minimal geometric distortion, whereas cannulated screws generated larger signal loss areas, particularly on Turbo 3D T1 and fat-suppressed sequences. Despite these differences, humeral condyle assessment remained feasible with both screw types. CT findings were reversed, with solid screws exhibiting more pronounced metallic artifacts including beam hardening and streaks compared to cannulated screws. However, peri-implant structure assessment was achievable regardless of screw type. Artifact measurements varied by group, suggesting that screw design, material composition, and dimensions significantly influence image quality. The findings emphasize the importance of considering screw selection and imaging protocol planning to optimize diagnostic capabilities in orthopedic surgery cases.
