This proof-of-concept study evaluated the feasibility and short-term outcomes of intra-articular collagen-elastin hydrogel microparticulate (CEHM) injection in 40 client-owned dogs with suspected cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCD) and/or osteoarthritis (OA). Using Simon's two-stage clinical trial design, dogs received a single CEHM injection with follow-up over 84 days. Primary outcome was improvement in modified Glasgow composite pain score (mGCPS), with 55% of dogs (22/40) achieving ≥25% improvement. Secondary subjective measures including clinician and owner assessments also showed statistically significant improvements. However, the study had significant limitations including lack of objective lameness quantification, surgical confirmation of CCD diagnosis, blinding, randomization, and control group. The CEHM device demonstrated feasibility within subjective pain assessment parameters.
