MXSG and SGMH effectively treat MG infection, rivaling Tylosin with enhanced long-term pathogen control.
This randomized controlled trial evaluated four Chinese herbal medicines and formulations against Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infection in 196 SPF chickens challenged at 10 days of age. Treatment groups received Maxingshigan Decoction (MXSG), Modified Sheganmahuang Decoction (SGMH), Tea polyphenols (TP), Bidens pilosa L. (BP), or Tylosin for 5 days starting Day 14 post-infection. Clinical assessments, pathological lesions, and pathogen load were monitored through Day 21. MXSG demonstrated superior clinical symptom improvement and most effectively reduced tracheal and pulmonary MG proliferation by Day 21. TP and BP promoted exceptional weight recovery comparable to healthy controls but showed moderate pathogen clearance. SGMH rapidly reduced tracheal MG load by Day 7. Tylosin produced the greatest lung lesion reduction but inferior long-term pathogen control compared to MXSG. No adverse effects were documented. The findings support MXSG and SGMH as viable Tylosin alternatives for therapeutic MG treatment, while TP and BP show promise as complementary growth-promoting agents.
