This randomized placebo-controlled trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of oral baicalin in 56 client-owned dogs with naturally occurring canine atopic dermatitis (cAD). Dogs received either baicalin or placebo for 90 days with assessments using CADESI-04, pruritus Visual Analog Scale (PVAS), quality-of-life questionnaire, and biochemical parameters at baseline and day 90. The baicalin group demonstrated significant improvements in all primary endpoints compared to baseline: CADESI-04 (p<0.001), PVAS (p<0.001), transepidermal water loss (p=0.014), serum IgE levels (p<0.001), and quality-of-life scores (p<0.001). When compared directly to placebo, baicalin-treated dogs showed significantly lower CADESI-04 and PVAS scores (p<0.001), with 82.1% of baicalin-treated dogs achieving good-to-excellent response versus 35.7% in the placebo group. The treatment demonstrated excellent tolerability with no reported adverse effects. These findings support baicalin as an effective therapeutic option for mild-to-moderate canine atopic dermatitis.
