Summary

This experimental study evaluated hydroxyapatite-cobalt ferrite composite biomaterials loaded with ciprofloxacin for treating osteomyelitis in a rabbit model. Osteomyelitis was surgically induced via Staphylococcus aureus inoculation into humeral bone defects. After 15 days, animals received surgical debridement with or without biomaterial implantation. Radiographic assessment at 15 and 42 days, combined with micro-computed tomography and histological analysis, revealed that while cortical bone destruction and porosity were similar between groups, treated animals demonstrated significantly greater new bone deposition and reduced necrosis compared to untreated controls. These findings suggest that magnetic nanoparticle-composite delivery systems enhance bone regeneration in infected defects, potentially offering an effective local antimicrobial and osteogenic approach to osteomyelitis management and reducing systemic antibiotic dependence.
