This retrospective study evaluated the safety of neoadjuvant intralesional triamcinolone (NIT) in dogs undergoing surgical excision of cutaneous and subcutaneous mast cell tumors (MCTs). Sixty-nine dogs with 78 MCTs were included, with NIT administered within 30 days of surgery. Overall surgical site complications (SSCs) occurred in 25% of cases, with 90% classified as minor complications. Notably, tumors receiving ≥2 triamcinolone injections had significantly lower SSC incidence (0%) compared to single injection (36%). No significant associations were found between SSC incidence and triamcinolone dose, injection timing, tumor characteristics, perioperative medications, or bandaging practices. Among tumors with documented response, 65% demonstrated size reduction with median reduction of 40%. The findings suggest NIT administration does not increase short-term postoperative incisional complications and may provide additional benefit through tumor size reduction and decreased peritumoral inflammation, supporting its use as an adjunctive therapy in canine MCT management.
