Summary

This prospective study evaluated diagnostic biomarkers for feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) infection in 59 cats (28 infected, 31 controls). Serum amyloid A (SAA) demonstrated excellent diagnostic utility with significantly elevated concentrations in FPV-infected cats (median 174.05 µg/mL vs 5.00 µg/mL in controls). Hematology-derived inflammatory indices, particularly aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI) and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), showed strong diagnostic performance (AUC 0.92 and 0.91, respectively), with no significant difference compared to SAA by DeLong analysis. Serum procalcitonin (PCT) showed no diagnostic utility and lacked correlation with biochemical variables. FPV-infected cats exhibited characteristic findings including leukopenia, reduced albumin, elevated glucose, and significant alterations in complete blood count parameters. The study supports SAA as an excellent diagnostic biomarker for FPV infection and identifies cost-effective hematology-derived indices as practical adjunctive diagnostic tools derived from routine laboratory data.
