Twelve adult cats were enrolled in a 3×3 replicated Latin square design, receiving each treatment for five days: dry diet alone (CON), dry diet plus a treat containing 0.99% sodium (TRT A), and dry diet plus a treat containing 1.55% sodium (TRT B). Both treat treatments significantly increased total water intake (TWI) compared to the control, with TRT B showing a stronger effect (p=0.001) than TRT A (p=0.009). Urine specific gravity (USG) was significantly lower in both treat groups versus control, indicating improved hydration status. Urine protein and creatinine concentrations were also reduced in treat-fed cats, suggesting a dilution effect with potential renal benefits. Notably, free water intake from fountains did not differ between groups, implying that the moisture delivered directly through treats—rather than compensatory drinking—drove the increased TWI. Serum magnesium was modestly higher in the control group compared to TRT B. No significant differences were observed between TRT A and TRT B for any measured parameter, suggesting that the lower sodium formulation is equally effective. Urine pH varied by day but was not treatment-dependent. The results indicate that palatable, nutrient-enriched lickable treats represent a practical dietary strategy to augment hydration in cats consuming dry kibble, potentially supporting urinary tract health.
