SHMs assessed included owner-reported disc disease status (UK) and radiographic disc calcification number groups (Norway and Denmark). Binary logistic regression and proportional-odds ordinal logistic regression models were applied respectively. Results consistently demonstrated that smooth-coated dachshunds had significantly worse spinal health outcomes compared to wire-haired and long-haired counterparts across all three populations, with odds ratios ranging from 1.81 to 2.59. Within coat types, the association between size and SHMs was inconsistent. However, small smooth dachshunds exhibited the worst spinal health outcomes in 12 of 15 size-coat type comparisons, with odds ratios ranging from 1.80 to 5.40 compared to other size-coat combinations. The authors propose that the furnishings (wire) coat gene, R-spondin-2, may contribute to improved disc health in wire-haired dachshunds, offering a plausible genetic mechanism. These findings suggest that coat type—and to a lesser extent the combination of small size with smooth coat—are meaningful determinants of IVDD susceptibility in dachshunds.
