This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and clinical utility of owner-obtained intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements in 14 dogs predisposed to primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). Using the TonoVet Plus tonometer, dog owners monitored IOP from diagnosis of PACG predisposition until development of overt glaucoma or study conclusion. Nine dogs progressed to overt glaucoma, four were lost to follow-up, and one continues monitoring. A notable finding was that in seven of nine dogs developing overt glaucoma, onset was characterized by sudden IOP spikes exceeding 50 mmHg without preceding gradual elevation patterns. Dogs treated with latanoprost after glaucoma onset continued experiencing sporadic IOP elevations. The study demonstrates that home-based IOP monitoring by owners can provide valuable data for managing canine PACG, potentially identifying sudden pressure changes that might otherwise be missed during standard veterinary examinations. This approach may enhance early detection and management of acute glaucoma episodes in predisposed dogs.
