Assessment of Ocular Surface Pathogen Susceptibility to Ultraviolet-C (UVC) Light Treatment With a Novel Prototype Device-An In Vitro Study.

This in vitro study evaluated the efficacy of a novel UVC light device (265 nm wavelength, 2.50 mW/cm² intensity) against bacteria isolated from veterinary infectious keratitis cases. Twenty-seven clinically-derived bacterial isolates and three type culture strains were exposed to UVC light for 1, 2, 3, and 5 seconds. Bacterial species tested included Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (including MRSP), Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus canis, Escherichia coli (including multidrug-resistant strains), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens. Complete bacterial growth inhibition occurred in 11 of 30 isolates at exposure times ≤5 seconds. Partial efficacy with ≥33% growth inhibition at 5 seconds was observed in 18 of 19 remaining isolates. Notably, all P. aeruginosa isolates were completely inhibited within 5 seconds, and multidrug-resistant strains showed comparable susceptibility to susceptible counterparts. S. marcescens demonstrated the greatest resistance to UVC treatment. These findings suggest potential clinical application of UVC therapy as an adjunctive treatment to topical antibiotics in companion animal keratitis management.
